It grows in sparse forests, forest edges, sunny ridges and grasslands in low mountains. It is a representative species of wild azaleas in Japan and has the widest distribution area among wild azaleas in Japan.
The extravagant flowers are seen hanging from the long inflorescence, or flower stalk. There are 5 petals, 2 of these are small and the rest are of unequal size. These petals are crimson; the two medium-sized petals are yellow at the tip and the largest petal is broad and fan-shaped with a wavy upper margin and a yellow triangle of colour extending from the lip down into the flower.
The flowers are in cymes with 10-20 flowers each. They have purple or red corollas and corona lobes that are yellow or orange. Flowering occurs nearly year-round. The 5–10 cm long, fusiform shaped fruits are called follicles.
The capitula are solitary at the end of peduncles just beyond the leaves. Each capitulum is formed by a central disc of tubular flowers, surrounded by ligulate peripheral flowers, whose color is very variable. The orange-yellow flowers are however the most numerous, often with black spots at the base of the ligules.
The tree grows rapidly and is capable of reaching heights of 15 m in 25 years. It is considered a noxious weed and vigorous invasive species, and one of the worst invasive plant species in Europe and North America. The flowers are small and appear in large panicles up to 50 cm in length at the end of new shoots. The individual flowers are yellowish green to reddish in color, each with five petals and sepals. The sepals are cup-shaped, lobed and united while the petals are valvate , white and hairy towards the inside.

The inflorescence has one to five short-haired flowers. They are hermaphroditic and scentless, have six upright orange tepals, the outer are slightly narrower than the inner ones. Japanese native Thunberg Lily, particuraly (L. maculatum subsp. Dauricum) is very close to this lily.
