Brief explanation It is one of the best Japanese garden built in early Edo era as feudal load garden to remain in Tokyo. As a Japanese-style garden strolling around ponds, the arrangement of the compartment and stone garden around the pond is very good.
The land was reclaimed the sea level around the time of meireki (1655-1658 years), councilor Okubo tadatomo started to build a garden named "Rakukotobukien".on the land given from 4th Shogunate Ietsuna in 1678. The garden, after having passed through the several owner, Kishu Tokugawa family had it around the end of the Edo period, then, in 1871 became the property of Arisugawa Miyake, finally Imperial Household Agency purchased in 1875. Then it became a Shiba-Rikyu. In 1924 in January, it is bestowed to the city of Tokyo for celebrating marriage the then Crown Prince (Emperor Showa), and opened to public in the same year.
