Place to go : The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace

Recommended time : At least 1.5 hours, preferably more than 2 hours.

Reason of recommendation : The Imperial Palace East Gardens are part of the inner palace area, which used be Edo Castle, and are open to the public (admission free!). The gardens are located near the business area " marunouchi" or "otemachi" and Tokyo station and Ginza shopping area. 

Although none of the main buildings remain today, but some buildings such as moats, walls, entrance gates and several guardhouses still exist. Edo Castle was the residence of the Tokugawa shogun who ruled Japan from 17th to 19th century before Meiji Restoration and it was a center of policy making and administration.  From some points, you can watch huge area of Imperial family's residence.

You can relax at center lawn surrounded by many plants including beautiful Japanese Edo style garden with pond and orchard of old variety of fruits. You can check flower calendar (English) and flower map (Japanese only) before visiting the gardens. Detailed information is here.

Azalea (Rhododendron): April-May

Place to go : Koishigawa Korakuen garden

Recommended time : At least 1 hours, preferably more than 2 hours.

Reason of recommendation : The garden was built in early Edo era (early 17c) by the Mito Tokugawa family, one of the most powerful “daimyo” feudal lord. This garden features a central pond and hills, typical Japanese garden for a stroll. The garden is also influenced by some concepts of the Chinese Confucian of the Ming dynasty.
A paddy field for rice and iris is located inside of the garden, and visitors can find scene of country side in the heart of downtown Tokyo.
From some part of the garden, you can find artificial roof of Tokyo dome ballpark, which is next to the garden, and you may enjoy scene of combination of old Japanese tradition and cutting edge technology.
