和名は夏に入って芽が出ること（夏芽）に由来すします。花期は初夏で、花は淡緑色で小さく目立たず、葉腋に数個ずつつけます。果実は核果で、長さ2cm)ほどの卵型か長楕円形または球形でなめらかで、熟すと赤黒くなり次第に乾燥してしわができます。
The flowers are small, 5 millimeters wide, with five inconspicuous yellowish-green petals. The fruit is an edible oval drupe 1.5–3 cm deep; when immature it is smooth-green, with the consistency and taste of an apple with lower acidity, maturing brown to purplish-black, and eventually wrinkled, looking like a small date.
