静岡県三島市・国立遺伝学研究所でオオシマザクラにエドヒガンを交配して育成された品種です。染井吉野の起源の研究に多くの材料を提供してくれた伊豆半島の天城山に因んで、また、研究に関連した桜であることを明らかにするために命名されたそうです。陽光の親にもなっています。
It is a variety bred by crossing Oshima cherry with Edohigan at the National Institute of Genetics, Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It was named reflecting Mt. Amagi on the Izu Peninsula, which provided a lot of materials for the study of the origin of Somei yoshino, and to clarify that it is a cherry tree related to the national study. It is also the parent of Yoko-sakura.
