葉に芳香があり古代から用いられています。乾燥した葉は香辛料ローリエになります。花期は春（4 – 5月）で、葉腋に黄白色の小花を群がって咲かせます。古代ギリシアでは葉のついた若枝を編んで「月桂冠」とし、勝利と栄光のシンボルとして勝者や優秀な者達、そして大詩人の頭に被せました。
Laurel is an aromatic evergreen tree or large shrub with green, glabrous smooth leaves, in the flowering plant family Lauraceae. The flower is pale yellow-green, about 1 cm diameter, and they are borne in pairs beside a leaf. Bay laurel was used to fashion the laurel wreath of ancient Greece, a symbol of highest status.
