本品種は、羽生田郁雄が発見した普賢象の枝変わり品種の園里黄桜の花がさらに特化（更に緑色を増したもの）した枝変わりと考えています。名の由来は、同地に伝わる竜伝説によるものと推測されます。
This variety is thought to be a more specialized (further green) sport of the Sonosato Kizakura discovered by Ikuo Hanyuda. The origin of the name is presumed to be due to the legend of the dragon that is handed down in the area.
