葉が美しく樹形が整うため、庭木として庭園に植栽され、江戸五木の一つで、モチノキやマツと並び「庭木の王」と称されます。7月ごろになると、直径2cmほどの黄白色の花をつけ、芳香を放ちます。1cmあまりの大きさの卵状球形の果実が実り、秋になると熟してぶ厚い果皮が裂け、赤い種子を露出し、樹上で赤く目立つため、アカミノキの別名があります。
