葉は4~8ｃｍ位の対生でハート型に似た円形で丸く薄いのが特徴的です。秋には黄色く紅葉する。落葉は甘い香り（醤油の良いにおいに似ている）を呈します。材は香りがよく耐久性があるので、建築、家具、鉛筆などの材料に使われ、碁盤、将棋盤にも使われます。
