南西諸島から沖縄に自生するツバキ属の花で、ツバキ属の中では最も小さな白い一重の花を下向けに咲かせますが、最も香りが強いと言われる原種で香り椿品種の作出の交配に使われています。
It is a shrub or small tree growing from 2–7 meters in height, with evergreen leaves and small white flowerswith strong fragrance.
