収穫時期のマチク（タケノコ）は鎌で切り取れるくらいの柔らかさで、それを蒸してから、さらに塩漬け・発酵させた後、細かく裂いて天日乾燥させたものがメンマとなります。
Young shoots are edible either raw or cooked. Mature culms are used as water pipes or made into small rafts, baskets, paper pulp, and for house construction.
