絶えず古い樹皮が長さ数10cm程度のうろこ状に剥がれ落ち、黄赤色の幹肌を現し、これが博打に負けて衣を剥がれるのにたとえたところが名前の由来とされています。花は夏から秋にかけてウワミズザクラのような白い楕円球状の花を葉の上に咲かせます。
It flowers July through October and fruits in the winter. Its white flowers are borne on racemes, and are typically 5 to 9 mm in diameter.
