ヤマザクラよりも標高の高い位置に自生していて、ヤマザクラと同じく葉の展開と開花が同時ですが、葉が新緑色になります。大島桜は霞桜の島嶼型と見られていますが、大島桜は花柄や葉柄が無毛です。
