北米に送られたソメイヨシノの実生から生まれた品種で、ソメイヨシノに比べ花がやや大きいです。アメリカではAkebono（アケボノ）と呼ばれていましたが、日本に導入する際、同名の桜との混同を避けるためにアメリカに改名されました。
This variety is developed from a plant raised form a seedling of Somei Yoshino (Cerasus x yedoensis ‘Someiyoshino’) which delivered to USA. In USA this variety called ‘Akebono’ but in Japan called ‘America’ for avoiding confusion old variety named ‘Akebono’ in Japan. It has larger flower than Somei Yoshino.
