春に葉が出る前に3〜4cm程の5弁の白い花を咲かせます。花のあとには3〜4cmの球形で緑色の実をつけ、秋には熟して黄色くなります。果実には種が多く、また酸味と苦味が強いため食用になりません。病気に強いことや、早く結実期に達することなどから、ウンシュウミカンなどの柑橘類を栽培するときに台木として使われます。
The flowers are white, with pink stamens, 3–5 cm in diameter, larger than those of true citrus but otherwise closely resembling them.The fruits are green, ripening to yellow, and 3–4 cm in diameter, resembling a small orange, but with a finely downy surface.
