夏に藤色で、シソの花によく似た唇形花を穂状に咲かせます。「コガネバナ」の名は、根の断面が鮮やかな黄色をしているためだそうです。根を乾燥したものを「黄芩(オウゴン）」といい、葛根黄芩湯等漢方に比較的よく使われています。
It is one of the 50 fundamental herbs using roots, called golden roots, in traditional Chinese medicine, it blooms many small blue-purple flowers on woody stems.
