メキシコ原産のケシの仲間ですが、葉にアザミのように鋭い棘があるので、アザミゲシと呼ばれています。黄色い花を咲かせます。種子から油をしぼり、灯火用や石鹸製造に使われたそうです
Flowers are at the tips of the branches and solitary, yellow and of 2.5-5 cm diameter. Leaves are thistle-like and alternate, without leaf stalks, toothed and the margins are spiny.
