花は赤紫色で、葉に白いまだら模様があるのが特徴で、その模様はミルクがこぼれたように見えるために、ミルクを聖母マリアに由来するものとしてマリアアザミの名があります。種子にフラボノリグナン類が多く含まれ、傷ついた肝細胞の修復を助けるとされておりサプリメントなどに使われています。
