The inflorescence is a cylindrical spike 30–40 cm long and can produce up to 120 flowers. The flowers are tubular, whitish, and lilac or rose in colour. The plant is famous of the shape of the leaf which inspired the ancient Greek sculptor Callimachus to model the capital of the Corinthian column.Also this shape was pictured in medieval mosaics. It is considered a symbol of wisdom or immortality and used as national flower of Greek or the crest of Kanazawa University.
