日本など東アジア原産の多年草で、小さな紫色の花を咲かせます。薄暗い藪の中でも育ちます、ランの名前がついていますが、どちらかといえばユリの仲間で、ラン科ではありません。
The small, showy flowers appear on erect spikes, white to violet-purple flowers rising above the leaves in late summer. Flowers resemble those of grape hyacinth (Muscari). Flowers develop into blackish berries which often persist into winter.
