秋に美しい実をつけますが、木としては役に立たないことから同じく役に立たない魚のゴンズイの名前を付けたといわれています。
Although non-showy yellowish-white flowers which bloom in spring terminal panicles, abundant heart-shaped capsules that ripen in September-October to a bright cherry red before splitting open to reveal shiny dark blue-black seeds.
