ジャスミンに似たつる性の花。英名(Asiatic jasmine)にはジャスミンの名前がついていますが正確にはジャスミンとは別の属になります。和名は、式子内親王を愛した藤原定家が、死後も彼女を忘れられず、葛に生まれ変わって彼女の墓にからみついたという伝説（能『定家』）に基づきます。花は５裂した花弁の先端が断ち切られて丸まったような三角形で、少しねじれてプロペラのような形をしています。なお、ハツユキカズラはテイカカズラの１種で葉のふの入ったもので、主に葉の美しさを楽しみます。
The white or cream flowers have a yellow heart and exhale a scent of jasmine, but it is not jasmine genus. The hypocrateriform corolla consists of a tube 6-10mm long, with an enlarged throat, and five obovate lobes, as long as the tube.
