香辛料として有名な植物です、辛さや形の違いにより多くの品種があります。唐辛子の狭義には唐は中国を表わしますが、この植物は中南米原産で西洋から持ち込まれ、「外国の」という意味として唐が使われています。
The species encompasses a wide variety of shapes and sizes of peppers, both mild and hot, such as bell peppers, jalapeños, New Mexico chile, and cayenne peppers. Cultivars descended from the wild American bird pepper are still found in warmer regions of the Americas. The single flowers are an off-white (sometimes purplish) color while the stem is densely branched and up to 60 cm (24 in) tall. The fruit are berries that may be green, yellow, orange or red when ripe.

Capsicum chinense/ bonnet pepper/ シネンゼ種
トウガラシの近縁で、少し丸いボンネットのような形をしています。学名のchinenseは中国のという意味ですが、中国原産ではなく南米原産です。ハバネロやCarolina Reaper、Torinidad Moruga Scorpionなど激辛の品種で知られています。異種ですが、同じページで紹介します。
