この花のつぼみや若い花が擬宝珠に似ていることからギボウシと呼ばれています。近縁のオオバギボウシ(Hosta sieboldiana)、コバギボウシ(Hosta sieboldii)、マルバタマノカンザシ(Hosta sieboldii)とその交配種で多くの種類があり、花色も白色、薄い青色、青色、葉も大きさや斑入りのものなど多くの種類があります。
The flowers are produced on upright scapes, generally taller than the leaf mound.The individual flowers are usually pendulous with six petals, white, lavender, or violet in color. It is unusual in that the flowers open in the evening and close by morning.
