春に白い小さな花をいっせいに咲かせ、秋に赤い実をならせます。東京ではよく植木や庭木にしているのを見ます。なお、属名のピラカンサで呼ばれることも多く、一般にピラカンサはこのトキワサンザシをさしますが、同属の下記のカザンデマリなど含め総称として示すこともあります。
The tree has small white flowers. It produces small, bright red berries. The fruit is bitter and astringent, making it inedible when raw. The fruit can be cooked to make jellies, jams, sauces and marmalade.
