ミズキの名前がついていますが、マンサクの仲間です。春に葉が出る前に黄色の花の固まり（７－８個の花）をつけます。ヒュウガミズキとの違いはトサミズキのおしべの先のほうがが少しオレンジか茶色の濃い色がついているので見分けられます。またヒュウガミズキの花は３つくらいの固まりです。
