オクラ科の植物で、オクラに似た花を咲かせ、種子の周りにつくいわゆる綿毛を集めて綿にします。
ケブカワタ（毛深綿）又はリクチメン（陸地綿）はワタ属の中で、栽培種として最も多く栽培されている種です。カイトウメン（海島綿）は、カリブ海の島々が原産の品種で、ペルー原産のペルーワタから１８世紀に作られた品種。ワタの中では綿毛がもっとも長く、作られた布は高級品として扱われています。
Commercial species of cotton plant are G. hirsutum (>90% of world production), G. barbadense (3–4%), G. arboreum and G. herbaceum (together, 2%). Many varieties of cotton have been developed by selective breeding and hybridization of these species.
Gossypium hirsutum is the most widely planted species of cotton in the world. Globally, about 90% of all cotton production is of cultivars derived from this species. Gossypium barbadense is known as Extra-long staple (ELS) cotton grows as a small, bushy tree and yields cotton with unusually long, silky fibers.
