晩秋から冬にかけて赤やピンクの花を咲かせます。椿と異なり花びらが一枚ずつ散ることで見分けることができますが、寒椿は椿よりむしろさざんかに近いなど、両者の見分けは、結構難しいです。
The flowers are 5–7 cm diameter, with 5–8 white to dark pink petals. Camellia sasanqua is valued in gardens for its handsome glossy green foliage, and fragrant single flowers that can range in color from white to deep pink and are produced extremely early in the season. Petals and stamen of sasanqua opens wider than Japanese camellia then distinguishable petals fall separately but sometime difficult to clearly identify.
