春に横に伸びた枝から白い花を下向きに咲かせます。実が苦い(えぐい）のでエゴの木と呼ばれているそうです。最近は園芸品種のピンク色の花を咲かせるベニバナエゴノキもあります。
Masses of slightly fragrant, bell-shaped white flowers (sometimes pink flowers) hang from the branches in summer, followed by fruits which resemble olives in both shape and color.
