その名のとおり、桃色（ピンク）の花を咲かせますが、白色や緋色のようなかなり濃い赤色のものもあります。花は桜よりもやや大きく、色も濃いことからよく目立ちます。花とともに葉も出てくるので、満開の時には、葉の間に花が咲くような姿になるものが多く、また果柄が短いので枝に密着して咲いているように見えます。果実は甘く夏の果実として多くの品種があります、また、花を観賞するためのハナモモも庭木として利用されています。花桃の中には、花の形が菊に似た菊桃や紅白の花が一本の木になる源平しだれなど珍しい花をつけるものもあります。
The flowers are produced in early spring before the leaves; they are solitary or paired, 2.5–3 cm diameter, usually pink but some white or scarlet, with five pointed petals. Comparing to cherry, flower stem of peach is much shorter. The fruit has yellow or whitish flesh, a delicate aroma, and a skin that is either velvety (peaches) or smooth (nectarines) in different cultivars.
