沖縄料理のゴーヤーチャンプルで有名な、ウリ科の植物。九州で栽培されてきた細長い品種は苦味が強く、沖縄で栽培されてきた丸い品種は苦味が少ないといわれています。栽培が比較的簡単で大きくなることから、壁にネットを張りグリーンカーテンとしての栽培が人気があります。
Its many varieties differ substantially in the shape and bitterness of the fruit. Each plant bears separate yellow male and female flowers. The fruit has a distinct warty exterior and an oblong shape.
