お釈迦様入滅の際にお釈迦様がこの木の２本の木の間で亡くなったので沙羅双樹とも呼ばれています。「祇園精舎の鐘の声、諸行無常の響きあり。沙羅双樹の花の色盛者必衰の理をあらわす」の沙羅双樹ですが、日本ではこの沙羅の木は育たないため、夏椿を沙羅の木とも呼びます。お釈迦様が入滅のときの沙羅の木には、かぐわしい香りがする淡い黄色の花が咲きほこっていましたが、入滅と同時に沙羅の木は枯れてしまいました。しかしその後、お釈迦様の死を悲しむかのように再び真っ白な花を咲かせ、その白い沙羅の花が舞い散りお釈迦様を覆いつくしたと言われています。また、タイやミャンマーでは、別の木（Couroupita guianensis）をサラの木と呼んでおり、少し紛らしいです。日本では、新宿御苑と滋賀県の草津水生植物園でしか開花した記録はないようです。
According to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha was lying between at pair of sal trees when he died. In Asia, the sal tree is often confused with the Couroupita guianensis or cannonball tree. It is very difficult to see flower of sal tree in Japan, only Shinjuku gyoen park and Kusatsu botanical garden have records of blooming.
