ヤマザクラ群で、伊豆諸島の原産で花が大きく香りも良いことから、ソメイヨシノの親になっているほか多くのサトザクラの園芸品種の作出に関連していることで有名です。花はソメイヨシノよりやや白色でソメイヨシノとほぼ同時期に開花しますが、個体差があることや、開花と同時に葉が出てくるので、大島桜のほうがやや早めに開花するイメージがあります。その葉は香りがよく静岡県松崎町などで栽培された葉が桜餅を包む葉として使用され、別名餅桜とも呼ばれます。
One of indinuous variety in Idzu peninsula the line of Yamazakura, and famous of one of parents of Someiyoshino. It contributes to make many cultivars by its large petals and good fragrance. They bloom almost same time to Someiyoshino because of but their individual difference of timing and their same time appearance of leaf and flower it makes some impressions Oshima blooms earlier than Someiyoshino.
