早咲きの桜で、その紅い花の色から緋寒桜（ヒカンザクラ）と呼ばれますが、彼岸桜(ヒガン）との混同を避けるためカンヒサクラ（寒緋桜）とも呼ばれることも多いようです。ただし、寒桜（カンザクラ）をヒカンザクラと呼ぶこともあり、混同されることもあるようです。日本の早咲き品種はこの緋寒桜との交雑種が多く含まれています。
It is widely grown as an ornamental tree, and a symbol of Nago in the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. This cherry blooms early spring particularly in Okinawa island, and popular of strong scarlet color and hanging down bell shape flowers. In Japan, early blooming varieties are developed using this variety as crossing parents.
